The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Monica Musonda

Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Java Foods   |  

Corporate lawyer turned entrepreneur, Monica Musonda is the Founder & CEO of Java Foods, a Zambian food processing company established to provide affordable nutrition to the Southern African market. Java Foods first product is “eeZee Instant Noodles” which is currently Zambia’s number 1 selling instant noodle.

By way of background, Monica is a dual qualified English solicitor and Zambian advocate with over 15 years post qualification experience. She has held senior positions in private practice with Clifford Chance (London) & Edward Nathan (Johannesburg) and working as in house counsel at the International Finance Corporation (Washington DC).

Her most recent position was at Dangote Group (Lagos, Nigeria) where she served first as Director Legal and Corporate Affairs and then as General Counsel. Monica was the project lead responsible for the Group’s $500m investment into Zambia to build the country’s largest cement plant, due to be completed in 2014. Her experience working with one of Africa’s most successful entrepreneurs (Aliko Dangote) gave her the impetus to start her own business and in 2012, she moved back to Zambia and set up Java Foods.

Monica currently serves as non-executive director on the boards of Bank of Zambia, African Life Assurance (subsidiary of Sanlam) and Dangote Industries Zambia. She also sits on the Microsoft Africa Advisory Board and is the Chairperson of Kwacha Pension Trust Fund, Zambia’s largest single employer pension fund. Monica is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader as well as an Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellow.

Clare Nkweto Simmonds

Director - PwC

Clare Nkweto Simmonds is a Director in the PwC's Advisory Consulting – Technology practice and has over 11 years experience in IT effectiveness.
Clare is solution focused with experience of implementing projects focused improving on both Finance Transformation and cost reduction, to achieve efficiency, growth and cultural change both in the private and public sector. She has strong public sector experience having recently managed projects, focusing on business process design and transition work streams in local government, as well as managing shared service centre implementations

Marcus Achiume is co-founder, CTO/COO at Mobile Payment Solutions, a Zambian software company specializing in transaction processing systems.
He has considerable experience designing and developing systems for both commercial and non-commercial purposes. He has brought several products to market, both in Zambia as well as the US, where he started his software career as part of a start-up software company that specializes in systems engineering applications.
He spends a lot of time understanding MPS’ client’s requirements, ensuring appropriate application of available technologies.

Duniya Mupeso

Duniya is a sales strategist with over ten years’ experience in the fields of ICT and Banking. Her career has been focused on business development, sales management and strategic planning in both fields and she has been responsible for managing both sales and technical teams to grow business AND deliver solutions and services to clients. She is also an insightful and intuitive trainer with a passion for personal development.

Duniya was the first certified Cisco Sales Expert in Zambia as well as the first female Cisco Wireless LAN and IP Communications Certified Sales Specialist. She has played a key role in many pioneering solutions that have been developed for the Zambian ICT market including the introduction of introduction of fibre-based solutions, digital leased lines for data access, electronic billing systems for utility companies, and voice-based (IP telephony) network systems.

Irene Banda Mutalima

Irene Banda Mutalima is founder, primary investor and CEO of TUCUZA Associates Ltd, a Zambian private enterprise concerned with entrepreneurship and social transformation.

Irene is a microfinance specialist with 17 years’ experience at conceptual, executive management, governance and policy levels. Her exposure spans international borders in Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia

Irene has served on several boards in Zambia, Ghana, Malawi, the UK, the USA and Switzerland. She is an entrepreneur at heart and has developed a capacity to conceptualise and implement business ideas to success levels.

Matthew Grollnek

Founder - Startup Junction, Co-founder - Salama Documents   |  

Matthew loves innovation and startups, and believes that introducing business principals to the skills already present in Zambia and Africa will help create jobs and grow the economy. In these lines, Matthew founded Startup Junction (http://www.startupjunction.net) which strengthens the Zambian startup community and provides an entry point for investors targeting Zambia.

Matthew also co-founded Salama Documents (http://salamadocuments.com/), which gives individuals in Kenya a way to store copies of their legal and government documents in the cloud so that they can access them in case the originals are damaged or lost.

Matthew has an M.A. from Stanford University in International Education Administration and Policy Analysis with an emphasis on teaching innovation and entrepreneurship. Though originally from California, USA, he has lived in Zambia since 2006 and now considers Zambia his home.

Muchemwa Robert Sichone is an entrepreneur that is passionate about the sustainability and growth of small businesses in Zambia. He is the founder of Global Link Zambia Limited, which is a full service, value driven agency that provides business development solutions in research and strategic communications for the Government, Non-government and Corporate sector.

Professionally Muchemwa is Communication for Development and Multimedia Specialist with more than twelve years of applied experience in research and communication.

Silumesii Maboshe

Silumesii is the founder of Pencil Case Studios, a web development and photography studio in Zambia.
He is also a co-founder of BongoHive Lusaka's technology and innovation hub.

After studying in Wales and Canada, Silumesii returned to his native

The creative mind behind The SCND Genesis: Legends, a role playing game based on his comic of the same name set in a post-apocalyptic Africa.

Sibongile Simpson

Sibongile has 8 years in development of software solutions (packaged and in-house) in various industries for public and private organizations in Alaska and California.

She started her career as a software developer for business systems in the private and public sector. Sibongile merged that role into business analysis and project management work for some years. She also worked as a software tester and in IT quality management.

Sibo has a bachelors degree in Management Information Systems and a masters in Health informatics.
